Dr. Kurtin was an Optician before college making eyeglasses. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Biology, with honors, and studied Psychology, at Michigan's Ferris University. In 1985, he graduated with a Doctorate of Optometry from The University of Houston's Eye Institute, in Houston, Texas medical center. He has post graduate training as a certified optometric Glaucoma specialist to treat this disease. Dr. Kurtin is part of a network of Optometrists and Ophthalmologists offering surgery for vision, cornea, cataract and eyelid cosmesis.

Dr. Kurtin is one of a few doctors in the United States designated as a Platinum Synergeyes fitter for the treatment of mild to severe vision disorders resulting from post-LASIK, RK, Keratoconus or corneal surgery. He helps children with unusual vision changes using FDA approved refractive therapy (CRT). He developed the MultiFokus bifocal contact lens in the 1990's.
